Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that gives financial support to men and women in the construction field who have life-altering injuries. Each year the association honors various recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil endured a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the function of his left arm and the experience left his left leg severely impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would ultimately end up confined to a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, causing financial pressure on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, an apparatus that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help people with Adil’s condition walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they could not afford the device in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be needed so he could learn how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the generous grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
